The discourse on Artificial Intelligence (AI) often gravitates toward dystopian visions : mass unemployment, the subjugation of humankind by machines, or even the species’ annihilation. While these scenarios warrant  attention, they represent only one side of the coin. The emergence of AI also offers humanity an unprecedented opportunity : a moment of potential transformation so rare and consequential that it is best described as a cosmic lottery.

Why AI Represents a Cosmic Lottery

AI is not merely another technological milestone; it is an extraordinarily rare, high-stakes inflection point in human history – an event whose consequences could be magnificently beneficial or catastrophically ruinous. To draw an analogy: winning a conventional lottery is a once-in-a-lifetime event; winning a cosmic lottery is a once-in-an-eternity occurrence.

Consider the improbable chain of events that brought us here: life arose on a small planet orbiting an unremarkable star; intelligence evolved within one species; that species developed digital computing, global networks, vast data storage, and algorithms capable of learning, resulting in Artificial Intelligence.  The convergence of these factors is akin to dealing a perfect winning hand repeatedly; or drawing the exact sequence of winning numbers, not once, but many times in succession. Thus, AI, for us, represents a cosmic lottery.

If guided with wisdom, AI could address some of humanity’s most pressing issues:

• Abolition of Scarcity
  Through exponential technologies, intelligent automation, and discoveries in materials science and sustainable energy, AI could render scarcity obsolete. The Industrial Revolution leveraged Earth’s abundant resources to elevate living standards; AI has the potential to eradicate scarcity entirely.
• Radical Longevity
  Mankind has long yearned for immortality, as mentioned in scriptures and mythology. It may now be possible through AI-driven medical breakthroughs, potentially extending healthy lifespans far beyond today’s limit
• Directed Human Evolution
  Until now, life on Earth has evolved through natural selection. For the first time, AI offers the possibility of intentional, guided evolution in essence, allowing us to design a “software upgrade” for our species.
• Interstellar Expansion
  Earth’s tenure as humanity’s sole home is finite – whether threatened by environmental collapse, nuclear catastrophe, or cosmic events. AI could make feasible galactic travel and the exploration and colonisation of other worlds, ensuring the survival of our species beyond our planet.

The Existential Downside

Yet, like all lotteries, this one carries risk. The stakes are existential: should we “lose,” the worst-case scenarios, from authoritarian AI control to species extinction,  could unfold.

Through decades of innovation in microprocessors, algorithms, and data systems, we have already purchased our ticket in this lottery of the future. And there is no way but onward. We are riding a tiger with no safe way to dismount.

Maximising the Odds of Victory

Unlike games of pure chance, the AI lottery is not wholly random. Its outcome will depend on our capacity to govern wisely, act ethically, and innovate safely. Our choices on governance, ethics, technology and safety will shape the outcome of this lottery. The outcome will depend on human foresight, collaboration and restraint…whether we invest the winnings wisely or squander them.

We have already drawn the numbers; now we have to decide whether we’ll cash in wisely or turn the jackpot into ruin.
